Southern Maryland Christian Academy announces the Appointment of Mrs. Dawn Cobbs as Early Ed Principal for the 2020-2021 School Year
A brief Bio of Mrs. Dawn Cobbs
Mrs. Dawn Cobbs has been a K5 teacher at Southern Maryland Christian Academy (SMCA) for 6 years. Prior to SMCA, Dawn earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education, and Early Childhood Special Education from Tusculum University. She also earned her Master of Education from Towson University. Prior to joining SMCA six years ago, Mrs. Cobbs worked in Baltimore City Public School System in Kindergarten and first grade, as well as Celebree Learning Center. Mrs. Cobbs recently served on the SMCA reaccreditation and curriculum development committee. She enjoys serving on the Guest Services and Greeting Committee at her church. When asked what she loves about teaching, Mrs. Cobbs said, “Being able to make daily, life-long, positive impacts in the lives of young children, as well as being the foundation for helping to develop individual reading s kills. Children are resilient, and eager learners. Having the opportunity to contribute to the overall development of these future leaders is a feeling that is indescribable.”
Early Education Principal, a new position for the 2020-2021 School year, will oversee grades K2-Kindergarten.
Southern Maryland Christian Academy announces the Appointment of Mrs. Kristen Horton as Elementary Principal for the 2020-2021 School Year
A brief Bio of Mrs. Kristen Horton
Mrs. Kristen Horton has been a 5th grade teacher at Southern Maryland Christian Academy (SMCA) for 14 years. Prior to SMCA, Kristen earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and worked as a home-based ABA therapist to children with Autism. In recent years at SMCA, Mrs. Horton has been instrumental in the implementation of the Foundations and Frameworks (F & F) Reading program in grades K-6th. She stands as one of only two approved Architecture of Learning and F & F Trainers, able to train the teachers of SMCA. Mrs. Horton has also served on numerous committees, including reaccreditation, curriculum development, and National Honor Society. She has served as the Mission Team Coordinator, a program that provided missions trip opportunities for secondary students, for the past 4 years. When asked what she loves about teaching, Mrs. Horton said, “Teaching allows me to share my love for Christ and passion for learning with others. I feel like I am making a difference in the classroom by helping to facilitate a good working environment. Getting to know individual student personalities, informed by student strengths and weaknesses, is important to me.”
Elementary Principal will oversee grades 1st – 5th.
