2022 New Student Seminars
Students new to our middle school and high school gathered earlier this week for our New Student Seminars that gave considerable insight into what our secondary school has to offer. One student shared, “I learned how to better my high school experience, manage my time and workload, and gain as many credits as possible to prepare me for college.” Even students who have been at SMCA since K4 walked away surprised that SMCA’s secondary school has so many class options and opportunities via AP classes, dual enrollment, internships, the scholar’s diploma, and the required Capstone Project. The Middle School Seminar introduced students to MLA format with a document that broke almost every basic MLA rule while the High School Seminar looked at a document with a creative Works Cited list of fictitious books authored by a number of SMCA athletic coaches and full of MLA mistakes. Students also sharpened their awareness of schedules and classrooms, student handbook content, summer assignments, and our technology procedures via scavenger hunts and a survey with engaging multiple choice options. Marty Mustang, who is planning to liven up a lot more school functions this upcoming year, helped students mix during lunch and won a basketball competition emceed by Coach Jerry Nelson. When questioned what students might tell a friend about the morning, one participant expressed, “It was fun and very helpful. I recommend it and would like to do it again.” Kudos goes to Dean of Academic Affairs, Candace Crawford, for implementing this vision to help our secondary students continue to #thrive!
