2023 Math Olympics
On Friday, February 10, thirty-five SMCA students from 3rd-8th grades competed in the ACSI Math Olympics. This event allows students to showcase their God-given abilities in the area of mathematics. Students may qualify to compete in either the Computation or the Reasoning (word problems) sections. Six middle school alternates also served as helpers for the day, assuring the competition ran smoothly.
After completing four very challenging rounds of math, student scores of team members are compiled. They are then compared to scores of students in the schools of our assigned competition group. This year, we are competing against 8 other schools from Virginia to Minnesota and down to Texas. The top five student finishers in each grade level and category will receive awards from ACSI.
Students are now in what for some is the most challenging stage, waiting. Since Covid shifted this event to a virtual competition, students do not know who the winners are on the same day as testing. Sometime during the week of February 20, we should have official results, with the actual award ribbon and medallions coming after that time. Regardless of awards, I am proud of young people who are not ashamed of the gifts God has bestowed upon them. I pray they will continue to use their gifts in ways to glorify Him.
