Mustangs Shoot Straight at State
Westminster, MD, March 18, 2023. With their individual Bible verses in yellow on their maroon jerseys, the SMCA Archery team was among 30 schools competing in the Maryland State Archery Tournaments for Bullseye and 3-D targets. The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) in Maryland had almost 600 archers meet in Carroll County for a two-day showdown. In 3-D, the Elementary team placed 2nd, Middle School came in 3rd, and High School edged out a public school by 2 points to finish 2nd. Plus, the Mustangs came in 3rd place in Bullseye, and had some success as individuals.
SMCA students topped the podium again this year, as State Champions. This time, it was Christian Sylvestre beating all other boys with a 282 in 3-D, and Hannah Crawford shooting the highest score ever shot at a MD State 3-D, a 292. Then, Hannah did it again, with the last arrow of the tournament, the highest score ever at a MD State Bullseye, a 291, which also came with a $2,500 college scholarship, a Champion bow, and the State Champion title.
Other archers from SMCA who made the podium were: Marcelus West (1st in 3D Middle School boys, 282); Jasmine Harden (1st in 3D Elem. girls, 245); Roxanne Seigel (2nd in Bullseye Elem. girls, 255, and 5th in 3D Elem. girls, 223); and Langston Posey (4th in 3D Elem. boys, 238). Several shot their personal best. Those were: Hannah, Marcelus, Ryan, Blake, Trinity, Justin, Jackson, Makaela, Landon, Roxanne, Jerry, Jasmine H, Lauren, Langston, Samantha, Caleb, Jerermy, Vashti, Dylan, TJ, Kaylee, Ellie, Braxton, and Ava. SMCA had 47 archers compete, from grades 4th through 12th.
The team praises God for his goodness and looks forward to what He’ll do next as they move on to Nationals in Louisville, KY. For more information on NASP, visit naspschools.org.
