Teachers and Coaches Meet and Greet - Forming Relationships for Student Athletes
“I went to school to play basketball rather than to get a degree…I was a good student, but academics was certainly not my motivation.” Those were the words David McGlone, SMCA Athletic Director, began with after reading I Corinthians 12 regarding one body with many parts. Upon realizing that many of the coaches and secondary teachers couldn’t even recognize each other, he strategically extended the invitation to gather for dinner prior to the first Parent Teacher Fellowship meeting of the school year. The importance of the meet and greet was further emphasized as he spoke about the role that both the teachers and coaches play in the lives of the student athletes. Forming a relationship between teachers and coaches will help hold students accountable on and off the the court/field/track.
Coach McGlone thanked teachers for partnering with the Athletic Department in developing well rounded students and encouraged coaches and teachers to get to know each other. Chuckling was heard throughout the room when he reminded teachers that coaches have methods to motivate academics that teachers don’t have access to. As he encouraged coaches to be vigilant, supporting kids academically by asking students about their classes and helping them plan their time; he also encouraged teachers to attend games and comment to students about what they saw or enjoyed. He reminded both groups that kids will tell you all their business if you listen!
Coaches then introduced themselves. It was especially exciting to hear MS Baseball Coach, Billy Baden, share about the ball field being a mission field, and how his team is planning to invite other teams to pray with them before home games.
Thank you, Coach McGlone!
