Annual Middle School Spiritual Retreat
Retreat is more than just fun camp games and a sleepover. It’s a chance for students to explore their own identity, their beliefs and learn about the character of God. On October 18-19, 2023, middle school students trekked to West River Center to understand what commitment to God and an identity rooted in Christ looks like. Day one was all about making commitments. Students engaged in team-building activities in which they had to commit to work together. Whether it was canoeing for the first time, taking a plunge on the high-rope swing, faith falls or venturing through rope courses, students committed to trying new things, making new friendships and putting forth their best effort for the success of the team. Later that evening, SMCA’s chaplain Frank Shelton delivered a powerful message about the crisis Christians are faced with: being of or in the world. Students heard powerful testimonies about the consequences of not committing to Christ, along with inspiring messages about the power of revival and reward of Heaven when they do make the commitment. At the end of the session, the entire middle school made a recommitment to Christ through the salvation prayer, with some students accepting Christ into their heart for the first! For the remainder of day one, students attended small groups, fellowshipped, did line dances and enjoyed snacks long into the night. On day two, after a peaceful breakfast, Chaplain Shelton delivered another inspiring message about rooting our identities in Christ. “Who you hang out with, is who you become; if you root your identity in Christ, that’s who you can become like. You don’t have to fall for the craziness of the devil.” Students left the retreat revitalized and ready to commit to a new identity in Jesus! They returned to school and had the opportunity to further share their plans for their new commitment to the Lord. Special thanks to all of the staff at West River Center, Chaplain Frank Shelton, our wonderful parent and teacher chaperones, and Mrs. George & Mrs. Thompson for their coordination and servants’ hearts to make this such a fun, revitalizing and safe retreat!
