Reimagining the Senior Capstone: Enhancing Skills for College, Careers, and Beyond

The Senior Capstone Project received a significant overhaul this school year to meet not only the demands and needs of our students but also to enhance the 21st-century skills that universities, trades, and employers are seeking.

SMCA implemented the Senior Capstone Project in 2017 as a year-long endeavor in which seniors demonstrate their ability to link knowledge across disciplines and make relevant connections through authentic research, all while defending and integrating their biblical knowledge and worldview.

This school year, SMCA redesigned the Senior Capstone as a one-semester course (covering quarters one and two) and modeled it after the structure of a college freshman-level course. This redesign allowed SMCA students to experience the demands of a college-level course while still having the support and structure of a typical high school class. Other changes to the capstone included a revised manual, earlier implementation, cross-curricular learning with Bible and English classes, and a revamped research process. These adjustments provided students with a more robust learning experience and helped them finalize their 10-12 page thesis papers.

Students, faculty, and parents have praised the reimagined Capstone. Many agree that the shortened course helps seniors develop stronger time and priority management skills, improve their writing and presentation abilities, and increase their overall satisfaction with academic planning and preparation. Seniors also expressed excitement about using their Capstone portfolios and presentations for their college and career applications and resumes.

This year’s Senior Capstone presentations took place on January 23-24, 2025. They showcased the hard work and dedication that SMCA seniors put into their projects to meet the demands of a semester-long course. With topics ranging from juvenile delinquency to beauty aesthetics and gifted education programs, students’ passions, interests, and career aspirations were evident in their presentations. Judges were thoroughly impressed by the professionalism and maturity of each student’s presentation.

Each year, the Senior Capstone Project awards a $250 scholarship and a graduation medal to one senior whose presentation exceeds expectations. Judges score each presentation based on passion, relevance, research, implementation, and biblical integration.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the Senior Capstone winner for the 2024-2025 school year: Ms. Jada Harden, with her project titled “Dry Needling in Physical Therapy.” Judges were thoroughly impressed with Jada’s passion for her topic, as well as the hard work and dedication she put into her research and final presentation. Congratulations, Jada, and to all our seniors who completed their Capstone Project!
